I talked to Lee Binz, The Home Scholar, and with her fresh eyes she gave me input that my son was doing much more than I was giving him credit for. This was particularly true regarding what he was doing with his time when he was procrastinating on assignments I had given him. Instead he wanted to make whips, monkey-knot keychains, a dog collar, a belt, bracelets... All out of paracord! Lee pointed out that kids in government schools do these types of projects and get high school credit for it! So my son got some credit on his high school transcript for "Creative Crafts", and I was able to change my perspective when my son said, "I need to finish this first before I start that assignment..."

Keep up the good work, Chareen. No one told him at the time that he could get a waiver on the PT requirements. There was also some difficulty that caused him to decide to switch units.

So now that he is focusing on CAP again he is hoping to finish strong by reaching Lieutenant. (There's a special award at that rank; can't remember what it's called.) Don't know how that will work for him as he attends college out of state... Besides, when I would get so wrapped up in my own devices, the girls would be begging for a library trip, and I'd be saying, "Tomorrow... Tomorrow..." Trips like the zoo happened so rarely because of my tendency toward procrastinating...

A list like this created with input from the child can enable the child to get the activities he/she wants that still require parental assistance, like the 10-year-old wanting a few hours at the pool. Otherwise, give me my own agenda and I would practically say to my kids, "Have a nice summer! See you in the fall!" (Heh!
